In-Depth: Introduction0
I was dead stuck between two choices: painting and animation. I don’t quite remember how I made my choice, but I can tell you that my in-depth this year… is ANIMATION!
I’ve already done a little bit of animation in my Information Technology class with Adobe Flash, however, I didn’t like it that much because it was not very artistically demanding. (Julien will disagree with me, since he loves scripting…) I want to go more in-depth about it. From the basics. Like, frame by frame… but not stop motion, for some reason I don’t really like stop motion. Probably because if you accidentally move your “canvas” or camera it’s virtually impossible to fix it. Adobe Flash is also a vector program that sometimes corrects lines that I don’t want it to.
Anyway, back to the subject. Animation. If you can independently navigate the internet, you’ve probably seen one already, even if you’re not aware of it. In my wildest dreams, I see myself making work into play/play into work. What’s play to me? It’s drawing. I want to try my best to explore all kinds of animation, but especially hand-drawn animations. Originally I wanted to make a very long animation (TALONS anime opening? Ha-ha. I’m just joking.) but the aspect of a demo reel is beginning to look more and more appealing to me. Here are some examples of demo reels from professional animators:
The first animation was animated in flash… I’m really curious as to how much time that would take. The other two are the kinds of animation I want to try. The animator attended Capilano University, which isn’t that far from here!
A lot of hand drawn animations here. Pretty awesome, but I’m a little afraid that I won’t be able to live up to my expectations.
My current plan for a demo reel is loosely based on Pixar’s and Disney’s guidelines. You can read more about that by visiting the hyperlinks.
My mentor? I’m currently signed up for an animation course at my local art centre. The course doesn’t start until a day after this post is due, so I can’t confirm that the teacher there will agree to my mentor. There’s also Clayton’s aunt (big thanks to Clayton for helping me contact her. And putting up with me pestering him until he did.) who is a professional animator in North Vancouver. According to Clayton she’s interested in helping me! Even though I’m sick and tired typing those words made me feel all excited inside.
With high standards and an equally matched want to exceed them, I look forward to my first In-Depth study!
